Newborn Photography Tips for Parents

1. What’s the best time to schedule newborn photography session?
It’s best to schedule the session around the beginning of your 3rd trimester. That allows us time to discuss different ideas for the session, including props that I have in my studio or might be ordering.
2. How do we inform you of the arrival of the little one?
I am always excited to hear about this special news so feel free to call or email me. Some parents establish a custom email list to announce the arrival of their little one, and I found it very helpful to be added to the list.
3. What’s the best time to take pictures of the newborn?
We need our little prince or princess to pose for us to help us capture wonderful memories. Between 5 days and 12 days of age, newborns are still getting adapted to the world around them and aren’t as active. This is the best time to take the pictures. Also baby acne may flare up around 4 weeks of age, and while it is possible to remove it from the pictures, we prefer to limit editing the baby’s skin.
4. Where do you do the newborn photography sessions?
All newborn photo shoots take place in our studio, where we have an assortment of props and backdrops, and controlled lighting.
5. How long is the photography session?
Our newborn photography sessions are up to 4 hours in duration. These includes the time for change of clothes, feeding and soothing, and change of setting for us to take the pictures.
6. Are there any suggestions around what to wear?
Good choices in clothing is one of the key elements of a great photo session! For group sessions, clothing should be coordinated. Clothing should be simple and timeless. Favorites are jeans, khaki colored pants, white, black or neutral colored shirts, sundresses, gowns, hats and bare feet. Large, busy prints, checkered paĨerns & geometric designs don’t photograph well. I’ll be checking in with you to chat about clothing choices. It’s a great idea to plan the outėts 2 weeks before the session. Also bring ample change of clothes for you and the baby, as you can expect the session to be 3 – 4 hours.
7. Won’t the baby be cold during the session?
We need the area reasonably warm to comfort the newborn. I typically have the thermostat for the studio in the higher 70’s or 80 degree during the session, and have a space heater to use as needed. The baby’s comfort is our top priority.
8. What happens if the baby doesn’t sleep during the session?
No worries. We will work with you to schedule a follow-up session.
9. What happens after the session?
Typically a week after the session, I will send you information for accessing a secure, online gallery where you will preview the images and choose your favorites to be digitally ėnessed. For clients receiving prints, we will also for images and sizes you will like printed. We will then either create a DVD of your pictures or upload them to a secure online gallery, and deliver your customized photos, and additional products you ordered.
10. Am I forgetting anything?
During the session, I will be handling the baby and doing the posing. For the most part, you can sit back and relax. I may ask you to hold up a blanket or possibly help hold the baby in a certain position. Since certain poses will need your baby in his/her birthday suit, most likely this will lead to leaks happening on the blankets or me. I am totally used to this so don’t let that stress you out! In the end, the photos we will get are totally worth it.
